Controlling spiders is easy and difficult all at the same time. It's easy in the sense that spiders don't have any reason to come into our homes except to follow their favorite prey. It's hard in the sense that keeping spider prey out of your house is almost impossible to do on your own. That's why you need the local spider control experts at Green Flash Pest Control on your side.

What Kind Of Spiders Are There In San Diego?

We've got many different types of spiders here in The Golden State. Of course, California is famous for the desert tarantula, but despite the fact that this may be the first arachnid that comes to mind when you think about California spiders, there are a whole lot of spiders you are more likely to encounter in your house.

A few of the most common types of spiders you might encounter in your San Diego home include:

  • Cellar spiders
  • Crab spiders
  • Desert recluses
  • Garden spiders
  • Jumping spiders
  • Orb-weavers
  • Western black widows
  • Wolf spiders
  • Yellow sac spiders

Seeing most of these types of spiders is no cause for panic. The vast majority of the eight-legged arachnids in our home state are, in fact, harmless spiders. However, there are a couple of spiders on this list we do have to be concerned about.

Most Spiders Are More Of A Nuisance Than A Danger

The good news is that the overwhelming majority of the common spiders you'll find in your house are not dangerous at all. It's true that all spiders are venomous. However, most spiders do not have a venom that is powerful enough to endanger humans. The worst you will get out of most spider bites is swelling and pain at the site of the bite that will resolve itself in a few days.

However, we do have to worry about a couple of medically significant spiders here in San Diego. The main threat is the black widow. Black widows have a neurotoxic venom that can cause systemic symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, muscle spasms, and sometimes even trouble breathing.

We also have the desert recluse, which is a relative of the brown recluse. Like the brown recluse, the desert recluse has a hemotoxic venom that can cause necrosis around the site of the bite. This can lead to scarring and infection, so it should be treated by a medical professional right away.

Though neither of these spider species is considered a mortal threat to adults, both of their bites are serious enough to require medical attention, and black widows can be a mortal threat to small children and pets. So it's important to keep them away from your home.

Eliminating Ways Spiders May Be Getting Into Your Home

One of the best ways to get rid of spiders is to make it more difficult for them to get inside. This means inspecting the exterior of your home and sealing up any cracks and holes that may allow spiders to enter. You'll also need to make sure window screens are free from rips and tears and door sweeps are properly sealed with weatherstripping.

You should also think about construction gaps, especially chimneys and ventilation holes, that can let spiders in. Though it is inadvisable to plug these holes with solid objects, insect screens or even wire rodent mesh can help keep out larger spiders. Dewebbing these areas can also encourage spiders to move on from them.

Another great way to prevent spiders from entering your home is to remove attractants from it. As we said above, the only attractant that can draw in large numbers of spiders is an infestation of their prey. This means keeping cockroaches, flies, and the like out of your home can encourage spiders to look elsewhere for food and shelter.
